It's not that she doesn't believe Destruction when he tells her she can do the spell to wake up Nimueh from anywhere, but Bonnie doesn't want to take any chances. There are places on the earth that make it easier to reach through the veil between the seen world to the world beyond. A Hellmouth is one of those places but she doesn't want to go to Cleveland and, there's a risk of pouring too much magic into an active Hellmouth. The crater that was once Sunnydale seems like the slightly safer option and it's closer.

She drives until the road disappears, then she parks and takes out everything she needs to work the spell. Normally she'd want more time to prepare but there's a screaming urgency pulsing through her veins and making her head throb. Magic is wrong. Things are off balance and the surest way she knows to return the balance is to retrieve the Mother and Father is all magic. The Great Lady Nimueh and Uther Pendragon: friends, enemies, lovers, two halves of the same coin and any combination thereof. Whatever has happened they can hopefully put it right.

Or they'll wake up angry and destroy everything.

It's always a crap shoot with the two of them.

Bonnie lays out her circle. Casts her runes and digs her fingers into the warm earth. The first contact her hands make with the dirt around Sunnydale is like sticking her tongue to the top of a battery. A jolt runs through her body and she wonders if maybe the Hellmouth isn't quite as closed as it would like everyone to believe. There's so much more power here than there should be but it will work to her advantage. She speaks the words softly at first, a quiet murmur to the Great Lady. She knows Nimueh will hear her even if Uther won't. She's less likely to ignore the calls of a witch.

There's resistance. Someone doesn't want her cries to be heard but Bonnie doesn't care. Sweat rolls down her back and the candles she'd lit transform from single candles into columns of fire. She can feel the power rolling through her body as her heart slams against her ribs and her vision whites out and she can't see or hear anything but she can feel the primal beat of the world's heart.

"Our Mother, who art amongst us. Hallowed is thy presence. Answer your humble servant's plea. The balance has been destroyed and your children cry out. Awaken and give to us your wisdom to right the wrong that has been done. For ours is the Air. Ours is the Earth. Ours is the Wind. Ours is the Fire. And ours is the Water."

The earth heaved under Bonnie knocking her to one side and leaving a ringing in her ears as the wind howled over her circle. Clouds formed and lighting struck the center of the circle splitting the earth in half with a shower of sparks.

One second she was alone in the desert and the next a woman stood before her in a red dress. She placed her hands on her hips and looked down at Bonnie. "What have you all been doing while I've been asleep?"

A mother's love is a wondrous thing - it means that she can forgive her idiot children for the terrible things they do whilst she's sleeping.

The Great Lady wakes like she's being dragged through layers of time. Each passage feeds her more and more information about what she's missed, what's happened to her world and her magic while she's been gone. She sees them - all the magic users, all of her children and her children's children spread out across the world and it hurts. Every time she's reborn the pain is near unbearable but bear it she does because she is a mother who cannot ignore her children's cries.

The witch before her trembles and pants like a thoroughbred, power and desperation pouring out of her and Nimueh knows that she wasn't summoned for nothing. The wrongness is palpable. It's made worse by the absence of her other half. Normally Uther wakes with her. Without him the world tilts wildly towards magic and the power surges.

"Silly girl." Nimueh scolds, as she cloaks herself in a loose robe. "You should never wake one of us without the other." Closing her eyes, Nimueh reaches back into the dark for Uther, calling to him in the old common tongue of their lost world. "Uther Pendragon. Arise!"

There is no way that she will suffer these fools alone.
